Nokias history starts in 1865 when the mining engineer Fredrik Idestam established a pulp mill ground on the banks of the rapids Tammerkoski in the city of Tampere, Finland and the Southwest began making paper. Toward the end of the 19th century, Mechelins wishes to expand into the electricity business were at first thwarted by Idestams opposition.
